Nåli “the Needle” farm
This hike is almost mandatory when at Stalheim. Even professor Y. Nielsens travel guide from 1890 mentioned this hike. Alond the path you get a spectacular view of the Nærøy valley, Stalheim and the Stalheim hairpin bends “Stalheimskleivi.”
Nåli ( meaning “ the Needle” ) was a small farm up on a shoulder quite high up on the left side of the Nærøy Valley. Because of its difficult access the farm was abandoned in the late 1920’s, but the remnants of the houses and the stone walls still bear witness of the sweat and the toil of those who found their living on the farm remained for years. The remnants have now been cleared away, but the locals have places a couple of benches and a table here. This makes it a great spot for a picnic.
Part of this hike follows a dirt road for cars and tractors whilst most of it follows an old but proper path. In total this hike takes about 1,5-2 hours and is considered a relatively easy hike for most people of all ages. One should however beware that part of the trail follows an edge and this might not be the perfect tour for those frightened of heights. We strongly recommend that you wear good hiking boots, as parts of the trail can be rough and slippery. It is also recommended to not do this hike when or just after it has been raining, as there is a risk of rockslides during or just after heavy rain.
Starting at Stalheim, you walk to Brekke, take a right before the gate, go down and over the bridge, and you will see Sivle farm. From Sivle you follow the path up the garden and walk below the red cottage and into the forest.
The path to Nåli has recently been restored and is well marked with information posters and signs along the way. Bring a lunch packet and take a break at one of the many spectacular sites along the path.
