Stalheim Museum of Cultural History | Tønneberg’s collection
A visitor to our area should not miss a tour of the impressive Stalheim Museum of Cultural History. The museum, a result of the remarkable dedication and enthusiasm of the previous owner of Stalheim Hotel, Mr. Kaare Tønneberg, spans a time period from the late middle ages till pre-war Norway and is considered one of Norway's largest privately owned museums of its kind.
It aims to offer you glimpses of the everyday life on the farm as well as in the manor house at different time periods, in addition to provide an overview of the development of rural Norway since the late middle ages. The open-air museum, the exhibition building and the manor house are the three parts that constitute the museum.
The old farm
The first thing that meets you is the charming old farm yard comprising 25 farmhouses, among them there is a cottage from the 1500s and a barn anno 1650. There is the guest house from ca. 1750, the beautiful Lofthus loft and even a small school from 1881.
The exhibition hall
Dug under the old farm yard, you find the mighty exhibition hall. It comprises 2 levels of various rooms with different themes. The rooms gives you a tour of the different sides of the farmer’s daily life: one room shows brewing and old moonshine equipment, another shows baking, a third displays traditional costumes “bunad”, etc.
The Lekve manor house
On the top of the hill in the beautiful museum lies the small Lekve manor house from 1725. The manor house, originating from Lekve in Voss, is a fantastically restored both inside and outside as it appeared in 1750-1760. The Lekve manor house shows that even in Voss you could find features of continental culture and luxury.
